I love to learn, from the greats in the craft of drumming to anyone in life. I recently was watching a beautiful solo by the awesome Simon Phillips, and I was thinking he is just getting better and better with each passing year. His musicality, storytelling, dynamics, expression, the depth of his artistry is expanding all the time. I don’t know if it’s my imagination, or it’s as I get older myself, but I really think people’s ‘peak’ knows no more limits of age. The old school was looked at as ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’, which cutting edge brain science as recently as the 1990’s proved wrong. The brain is not hard wired at a certain age and then decays, but is plastic and grows over time, it just depends on 3 key habits:

  1.  How you look at things
  2.  What you put in your mind
  3.  Your lifestyle

Thinking ‘oh, you’re 50 now, this is the beginning of the end!’ is quite simply a MIND VIRUS. Don’t participate! There are so many examples of people kicking ass more and more with each passing year. I love the work of Jordan Peterson, Jocko Willink and many others that are completely reinventing themselves to show up at heights that they previously never imagined possible. There are also cultures out there very different than the west that don’t revere youth, but idolize the elderly. I can remember my drum lessons with Jim Blackley who was in his 80’s at that point, and just by his way of life demonstrated to me that getting older is something to look FORWARD to, and that our best days are ahead (‘Each year is better than the last’ he would always say around his birthday). If you can just STAY ALIVE, you will probably live to see an age (coming very soon) where health science will transform the norm into living well past 100 (Ray Kurzweil from Google is doing so much great work in this area).

Here’s what NOT to do as you get older, so you can be amazing at 100!

  1.  Don’t rest on your laurels
  2.  Don’t stay in your comfort zone
  3.  Don’t fill your mind with stories and beliefs that your best days are behind you
  4.  Don’t see the same people day after day, seek new experiences and challenges!
